the time I coached an undefeated team

I love volleyball. my love for the sport began in 3rd grade when I attended my towns volleyball summer camp, coached by the high schoolers. we learned the basics, improved our skills, ran some drills, etc. I loved it. I tried out and played for the middle school teams and then continued on at the high school playing a year on the freshman team, a year for JV, and two years on varsity. I loved it.

I then was given the opportunity to coach the 8th grade team for the middle school I once attended and played volleyball at. of course I took it, how could I pass that up? 'my girls,' as I often referred to them as, were amazing athletes. I could tell the first day of practice that we were going to be a solid team. definitely a team with a winning record.

game after game we came out with W's. practice after practice I pushed my girls hard, and I'll be the first to admit that I was tough on them. I knew their potential and made sure they always gave 100%. it certainly didn't come easily for them, they worked hard every day. and if they decided they didn't want to work hard, I made them work even harder.

we had fun too, don't worry. Fridays were known as our fun days. if the girls worked hard throughout the week, I let them slack on Fridays. playing various games, letting them choose the drills, and not being so tough with their consequences.

when the season was coming to an end and we were still going strong with an undefeated record, that's when I knew we could go all the way. the last few teams we had left on our schedule we had already beaten. and then we did it all again. finishing with a perfect 13-0. after the regular season we had a three game championship tournament. which we won, another 3-0 series, making us 16-0 and tournament champs. I couldn't have been more proud of my girls and all their hard work. it was a fantastic ending, the perfect ending, to one hell of a season. and certainly one hell of a time as a first year coach.

for going undefeated we were also inducted into the Captain's Wall of Champions. it's a local minor league baseball team and we're now hanging on their wall of champions.

it was amazing. more than I could ask for. more than I expected. and will forever be one of my most prized accomplishments.

what's something you've accomplished?
